How To : Format USB Drive With NTFS File System (Windows 7)

Usually, a USB drive can only be formatted with the FAT32 file system. FAT32 is only able to accommodate a 4GB file, according to Wikipedia: “The maximum possible size for a file on a FAT32 volume is 4 GiB minus 1 byte (232-1 = 4,294,967,295 bytes)“. In fact, many manufacturers produced USB drives with sizes more than 4GB.

If you have 8 GB USB drive, or even a 32GB, then you can format it with the NTFS file system. You do not need to use special tools, just use Windows 7.

1. Click on Windows Orb Button. Right click on “Computer” and click “Properties

2. Go to “Device Manager

3. Go to “Disk Drives“, right click on your USB drive’s name, click “Properties

4. Choose “Policies” tab, then choose “Better Performance“. Click “OK

5. Open Explorer, right click on your USB drive, choose “Format“. You’ll see more options on file system types.

By choosing this option, you must use “Safety Remove Hardware” when unplugging your USB drive.
